Culture
While many urban areas around the M25 can claim little in the way of history and culture, Brentwood is a town with roots reaching back to early medieval times. As well as an established sense of community, this helps make for an impressive local arts and cultural scene. The excellent Brentwood Theatre is well known for hosting both professional touring drama productions and a huge number of local amateur arts groups – a particular highlight being some super shows for children during December.
Also of benefit to young people in Brentwood is the Hermitage youth service. While young people in many other areas lack stimulating activities, here they enjoy the facilities at the Hermitage's café, youth club and popular live music venue.
The Brentwood Art Trail is an increasingly popular event involving local artists, schools and the community, and taking place every summer. There's also the Brentwood Performing Arts Festival, music participation for young people, and even an annual international chess tournament.
Leisure
The many open spaces in the area – perhaps the best known being the 700-year-old Weald Country Park – give plenty of opportunity for outdoor pursuits. There are golf courses close at hand, and two leisure and sports centres offer the chance to take part in football, swimming, badminton, squash and other games. Football, cricket and rugby clubs are also based in Brentwood, and a regular cycle race attracts some of the sport's top names.
Shopping
All the incredible shopping and cultural highlights of the capital are just a short car or train ride away, of course. But without stepping into London you can enjoy the retail facilities of Brentwood – recently boosted by a multi-million-pound redevelopment of the high street.
