Local information for Minchinhampton, Gloucestershire, GL6 9JA

Minchinhampton

Historically, this was an area of great prosperity, with the wool trade in the 17th and 18th centuries playing a huge part. The distinctive mellow
Cotswold stone architecture in the town remains, keeping the history of the trade alive long after the sound of the looms ceased. The ancient market cross which was erected in 1698 and the market square also remain as wonderful backdrops to the town.

Today Minchinhampton has retained the warmth and character of its ancient buildings, at the same time offering a range of modern amenities including a bank, post office, selection of shops, primary school, coffee shops, doctors’ surgery and library. There are also a wealth of excellent pubs and three gourmet restaurants to choose from.

This thriving town is perfectly positioned to take advantage of the beautiful surrounding areas, with rolling Gloucestershire hills, historic churches, typically English Cotswold villages and pretty gardens all within easy reach.

Local Area & Attractions

Nearby Minchinhampton Common, which belongs to the National Trust, is reputedly the most beautiful common land in England, with 580 acres of rough pasture where rare and wild flowers like cowslips and orchids bloom in abundance and grazing horses and traditional rare cattle breeds roam. This recreation area is hugely popular with cyclists, walkers, horse riders, kite flyers and golfers, all taking advantage of its open grassland and far-reaching views across Gloucestershire.

Venture slightly further afield and the surrounding areas offer breathtaking scenery, undulating countryside and sites of historic interest including Berkeley Castle, Sudeley Castle, The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Slimbridge and Westonbirt Arboretum, all within easy driving distance.
