Local information for Portsmouth, Hampshire, PO1 2JE

Proud of its maritime tradition, Portsmouth has been an important naval port for centuries. The Historic Dockyard, home to HMS Victory, HMS Warrior, the Mary Rose and the Royal Naval Museum, celebrates this illustrious past. Also commemorating this maritime heritage, the 170 metre tall Spinnaker Tower at Gunwharf Quays, opened in 2005, offers amazing views over the city, the south coast and the Isle of Wight.

For a touch of individuality, Southsea town centre offers an interesting range of independent shops, alongside some equally interesting bars and cafés. Here you can also enjoy great sea views, four miles of beach and the green open spaces of Southsea Common.

Between Southsea and Camber’s Edge, the cobbled streets of Old Portsmouth are home to some fine old pubs and cafés, as well as Portsmouth’s Anglican Cathedral.

With such a location it is hardly surprising that boating and sailing are prime leisure pursuits. The city is also well provided with several sports centres, swimming pools and opportunities and facilities for most sports. For those interested in Premiership football, Fratton Park is home to Portsmouth Football Club.

For entertainment, Portsmouth has an exciting range of music venues, cinemas, theatres, comedy clubs and art galleries. Portsmouth Guildhall is the city’s largest concert venue and regularly hosts live shows. The city also has many museums, most of which are related to its naval history. Other museums include the birthplace of Charles Dickens.

Excellent transport links are a available from the new houses and apartments for sale in Portsmouth. By road, the A3 starts just beyond the development and provides direct access to the M25 and central London. An alternative route is via the M27 and M3. The M27 affords access to the west, whilst the A27 provides the major route east.

For rail travellers, the station at Portsmouth Harbour is less than half-a-mile away and provides a link to most of the country’s rail network, including direct trains to London Waterloo. For air travel, Southampton is the nearest airport, whilst London’s Heathrow and Gatwick airports are very accessible. By sea, Portsmouth Harbour’s ferry port offers a number of cross-channel routes to France, Spain and the Channel Islands, or across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

With so much on offer in the city and with the added attraction of good communications and the close proximity of Hampshire’s beautiful countryside and coastline, Camber’s Edge is the perfect location for your new home.
