Rothley has been inhabited since Saxon times, it is mentioned in the Domesday Book and, during the Middle Ages, Rothley Temple (new the Rothley Court Hotel), was one of the manors of the Knights Templar.
Today this sleep East Midlands Village station has appeared in many movies and TV programmes as it is one of the four stops on the renovated Great Central Railway that runs from Leicester to Loughborough. The sounds, smells and excitement of the steam trains at the beautifully renovated little Edwardian station draw enthusiasts and families to their events from far afield. The station is still gas lit and special trains run on a regular basis.
The village has grown around the two Greens – Cross Green and Town Green and is reputed to have the highest density of ‘cruck’ cottages in Leicestershire and a number of listed buildings. This is a prosperous village that has a good primary school, many village clubs (cricket club, Brownies, Scouts, tennis club, church clubs etc) and the 100 year old Rothley Golf Club is to the south west of the village. For birdwatchers, dog walkers, hikers and cyclists, the magnificent Charnwood Forest is only a few miles away.
The main street of Rothley has a range of banks, shops, and a delicatessen with a bakery, a hair salon, post office, café, restaurants, takeaways and pubs. There is more shopping and lively nightlife in Leicester or Loughborough five miles to the South or North respectively.
Commuting from Rothley could not be easier as it is on the A6, 20 minutes from the M1. Regular trains run from Leicester to London St Pancras (also the Eurostar terminal) and North to Yorkshire.
