The arrival of the Grand Union Canal helped to establish the town as the major producer of most of London’s flour requirements, whilst the town’s own Royal Air Force station acted as Fighter Command headquarters during the Battle of Britain. Today, thriving Uxbridge is home to a variety of international companies and boasts two modern shopping centres – The Mall Pavilions and The Chimes - where most of the major chains and a multiplex cinema can be found.
Uxbridge owes much of its popularity to its excellent transport connections, its station serving both the Metropolitan and Piccadilly underground lines and providing travel to Liverpool Street station in around 53 minutes. In addition, there is an established local bus network and easy access to both the M40 and M25 motorways and London’s Heathrow Airport.
Home to Uxbridge Cricket Club, founded in 1789, the area is rich in recreational facilities, including sports grounds, an athletics stadium, tennis courts and an outdoor activities centre offering a variety of watersports on a 45 acre lake. There are a number of 18 hole golf courses in addition to Hillingdon Golf Club, founded in 1892 and the oldest 9 hole course in Middlesex, whilst for more leisurely pursuits such as walking or boating, some of the many glorious woodlands, parks and rivers make an ideal day out.
For families, the borough offers a diverse range of cultural activities including theatre, festivals and other arts events, as well as being generously provided with a superb choice of highly-regarded state and independent schools for pupils of all ages, including the acclaimed co-educational ACS International School in Hillingdon, Brunel University and Uxbridge College.
