The River Tees forms a horseshoe which encloses Yarm on three sides. The town centre is dominated by the High Street – one of the widest cobbled streets remaining. This street runs along the centre of the loop formed by the Tees. The High Street once boasted sixteen inns, as Yarm was one of the most important coaching stops on the north-south route.
Tradition is still at the heart of the town. The impressive 43 arch railway viaduct which shadows the High Street is now protected by conservation status. A number of Yarm’s old inns still survive and thrive, alongside a varied choice of chic shops, exclusive restaurants and a wide range of bistros, cafes and tearooms. A vibrant nightlife and an all round olde worlde charm cannot fail to impress.
This thriving market town has excellent local facilities and amenities, including a local supermarket, two health centres and seven primary schools in Yarm and three secondary schools within a four mile radius of the town. Yarm school is regarded as one of the best independent schools in the north east.
