£7.4 million housing development on track

Work has begun on constructing 47 modern family homes at the former Easington Greyhound Track site.

Leading regional housebuilder Charles Church Durham is building the homes, 10 per cent of which will be affordable, as it constructs the £7.4 million development called Moorfield, off Sunderland Road, in the town. In addition to construction on the 4.5-acre site, the developer will be making a £109, 972 contribution towards protecting the near-by Durham Heritage Coastline and improving open spaces and recreation facilities for the benefit of people across the area. Richard Cook, director in charge of Charles Church Durham, said: “As a responsible builder, whenever we start working within a community, we look at ways to support local people and infrastructure and deliver affordable homes. These Section 106 contributions are required as part of the planning process and, in the case of Moorfield, this will contribute towards improving and enhancing local life and protecting the coastline.”

The Home Builders’ Federation estimates 4.3 jobs are created for every new home built*, both directly in the construction industry and through the supply chain, which is also a support to the local economy. Richard added: “As well as having the opportunity of developing the former greyhound track site we are pleased to be creating jobs in construction and the supply chain which brings a boost to County Durham’s economy and the region overall.” Christine Cooper, sales director for Charles Church Durham, said: “We are currently offering three, four and five-bedroom homes at Moorfield, and have plans to offer two-bedroom homes in the future. “Work is well under way and there has been a great deal of interest in the development, situated as it is close to the Heritage Coastline and with excellent transport links to Durham, Sunderland and Newcastle.”
