Ashington

In the centre of a triangle formed by the Northumberland National Park, the Northumberland Coast AONB, and the vibrant city of Newcastle, Ashington is a former mining town with plenty to offer a wide range of buyers. With a good range of shops and amenities, great commuting links to Newcastle and a range of outdoor attractions including the seaside on your doorstep, this location has so much to offer.

Great local amenities

For everyday shops and services you’ll find everything you need in Ashington. The main shopping street hosts a range of high street stores including banks, pharmacies and cafes, and supermarkets include an ASDA superstore and ALDI.

In addition to the local facilities in Ashington, the neighbouring town of Morpeth (6 miles away) offers a wide selection of high street shops, boutiques, pubs and food outlets, as well as luxury brands as Sandersons Department Store. And of course if you fancy a spree, the bright lights of Newcastle are less than 18 miles away.

Range of schooling options

For families with school-age children, there’s a great choice of schools in and around Ashington. Local primary schools include St Aidan’s RC Primary School, Bothal Primary School and Bishop’s Primary School, as well as The Dales primary school for children with special educational needs which was rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. Secondary school options include Dukes Secondary School, Josephine Butler Academy and Ashington Academy. A further selection of schools can be found in Morpeth, a short drive away.

Always in reach

Ashington enjoys convenient transport links, with easy access to the A1, A189 and A197 for travelling across the region. The A1, around 7 miles away, stretches from Edinburgh down to London and passes northern centres of industry Newcastle, Durham and Leeds.

For rail travel you can head to either Pegswood or Morpeth train stations, which both have regular services to Newcastle. There’s also a frequent bus service from Ashington to Blyth, Morpeth and Newcastle, and for travel further afield, Newcastle International Airport is 20 miles away.

Enjoy the great outdoors

Living in Ashington you’ll be close to beautiful countryside and leisure spots for the whole family to enjoy. A couple of minutes north of the town is Ashington Community Woodland, a lovely place to go for a stroll, while next to that you’ll find the QE2 country park and its lake and mini trainline. The park and lake are next to the Woodhorn Museum; a former 19th-century coal mine, now a museum and heritage centre for art and local history as well as offering an ever-changing contemporary arts and event programme – making it a fun and cultural day out.

When the sun comes out, it’s less than 2 miles to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea  and its golden sandy beach, backed by shops and eateries.
