For those seeking a friendly, bustling town with great family-friendly provisions and proximity to several major centres in the North, Blackburn could be the ideal location. The historic town was first recorded in the Domesday book of 1086, and for centuries was an important centre for textile production. Now, after significant investment and redevelopment, the large town is a buzzing and convenient place to live, with a wide range of services and attractions that will appear to all types of buyer.

Enjoy local nature

Thought of as an industrial town, Blackburn actually has plenty of beautiful nature-filled spaces to enjoy. The historic Corporation Park is set just outside the town centre and is a great asset to the area, with tree-lined walks, a Victorian conservatory, ornamental gardens, lake, playground and sports facilities. On the other side of town, Queen’s Park with its lake is another pleasant place for a walk or picnic, while a few miles outside the town there are 480 acres of woods, fields, play facilities and sports grounds at Witton Country Park.

Everything you need and more

Living near Blackburn, you’ll find all the shops, services and attractions you could need within easy reach. The town centre, dotted with impressive historical buildings and sleek modern additions, is full of high street and independent stores, essential shops, bars and eateries. Visit The Mall to find a number of popular brands under one roof, or Blackburn Market, a traditional indoor market hosting a variety of local businesses. There are lots of attractions to explore around the town centre, too. Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery is home to a fascinating collection, the Blackburn Empire theatre hosts shows and events throughout the year, and the magnificent Cathedral is a peaceful escape with a great café downstairs. That’s not to mention the cinemas, sports facilities and arts venues in Blackburn – there’s something for everyone.

Education for all

Blackburn is a great choice for families, with a range of schools for children of all ages. There are many primary schools in the area, several of which (such as Wensley Fold and Blackburn the Redeemer CofE) are rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted. There are also several secondary schools to choose from, along with a grammar school, and a number of nurseries. Further qualifications can be obtained at Blackburn College, which has a University Centre.

Handy transport links

Those travelling for work of leisure will enjoy the transport options from Blackburn. The town sits between Preston and Burnley, both of which can be reached in less than half an hour by car. The nearby M6, M65, M66 and A666 mean that Lancaster, Manchester and Bolton are also within easy reach. For rail travel there’s a train station in the heart of the town and several more in the outskirts, which provide routes to many of the major centres in the North. There’s a good local bus network, and for travel abroad Manchester Airport is 40 miles away.
