Chester-le-Street

Chester-le-Street is halfway between two very different cities: Compact and historic Durham with its cathedral and castle, and 24/7 Newcastle upon Tyne with its heart on its sleeve. It’s halfway between the East Coast and the Durham Dales too. Chester-le-Street has the A1(M) on its doorstep, and Gateshead, Washington, South Shields, and Sunderland are all within easy reach. This is a popular and historic market town that still has a market three days a week. It’s an ideal location for commuting across the North East, or for taking a break on the coast or in the countryside, and that makes it an ideal place for a new home.

Great location

This is a town with great connections in the North East. The A1(M) leads the way past Chester-le-Street. At Washington, it splits into the A194(M) to South Shields, and the A1 with its long-distance route to Edinburgh via Newcastle upon Tyne. Newcastle is 11 miles to the north. The A167 is the link with Durham, 7 miles to the south. You can get to either city by train too, a 15-minute journey into Newcastle, and a quick 6 minutes into Durham. There are really good local bus services through the town too, operating from the Picktree Lane Depot. Newcastle International Airport is 17 miles away, usually just over half an hour’s drive, with a train link if you want to leave the car at home.

Hometown

Chester-le-Street has plenty to offer close to home. It’s got a wonderful old high street with plenty of independent shops, a marketplace, a shopping centre, and a superstore. The Riverside Ground is home to Durham County Cricket Club, there’s an amateur rowing club making the most of the River Wear and regarded as quite a GB training ground, and there’s a golf club. The Riverside Park includes a Skatepark and café, and the Waldridge Country Park just outside town, is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and wildlife haven. There are 8 primary schools and 2 secondary schools, Park View School and The Hermitage Academy.

Further afield

From Chester-le-Street you can choose the Metrocentre shopping and leisure destination at Gateshead, the long sandy beach and long pier at South Shields, the cobbled streets leading up to Durham Cathedral from the busy market square – and the stunning view from the top, or the wild landscapes of the Durham Dales as they meet the North Pennines.
