Chesterfield

From Chesterfield it’s as easy to get into Sheffield for city life and culture, and city-sized shopping, as it is to get into the Peak District National Park for peace and quiet, unspoilt countryside and picturesque village pubs. It’s as easy to hop onto the M1, as it is to take a cross-country route and take your time. Either way, Chesterfield is a great place for a new home, with great connections to Mansfield, Nottingham, and Derby, as well as the smaller towns of Matlock, Bakewell, and Newark-on-Trent, and of course Sheffield, just 12 miles north.

In town

Chesterfield has excellent market town facilities, including a traditional street market which takes place three times a week. It’s one of the largest open-air markets in the country. There are atmospheric medieval streets called The Shambles, modern shopping centres – Vicar Lane Shopping Centre, the Ravenside Retail Park, and the Alma Leisure Park which combines shopping with places to eat and a cinema. You’ve got the usual range of national supermarkets here too, so plenty of choice for your day-to-day shopping. Queens Park is one of the towns largest green space, complete with a lake, and a nearby sports centre. For health services, Chesterfield Royal Hospital is in the Calow area of town off the A632.

At school

The town has a choice of 10 secondary schools, depending on the catchment area. About half of these have their own sixth form. As an alternative, Chesterfield College of Further Education is a popular choice for 16+ education.

On the road

The main roads passing through Chesterfield are the A61, which goes into the heart of Sheffield, the A619 which heads west, joining the A6 at Bakewell, and the A617 Mansfield road which joins the M1 at Junction 29 to the south of the town. The A632 and 6192 take you to Junction 29A to the northeast of the town at Duckmanton. If you want to leave the car behind, the average journey time to Sheffield by train on the East Midlands Railway is 20 minutes. It’s only a few minutes more by train to Derby, and about 40 minutes to Nottingham. East Midlands Airport is below Derby and Nottingham, 35 miles away, and for a larger range of international destinations Manchester Airport is 41 miles away.

Time out

Chesterfield has a Multiplex Cinema at the Alma Leisure Park, as well as the Pomegranate Theatre & Cinema in the town centre. For a grand day out, Chatsworth House is less than 10 miles away, and is a great all-round family day out. Head on into the Peak District National Park and set off for a hike from the popular village of Edale or follow the scenic A57 – Snake Road – along the Ladybower Reservoir.
