Cottingham

Cottingham is on the northern outskirts of Hull, with the countryside of the Yorkshire Wolds as its backdrop, and the city and the great Humber waterway spread out below it. Its location puts it on a very convenient route for commuting to work, for city centre shopping, and for leisure and entertainment. A new home in what’s said to be the largest village in England, has easy access to city life and countryside in equal measure, and you can throw in the long line of the east coast and the North Sea, as it’s only 20 miles to the family-friendly seaside resort of Hornsea.

On the road

There are various options for driving into Hull city centre just 5 miles away, including the A1079, which is the York to Hull road. The A164 is the direct route that skims the west of the city, starting in Beverley, and crossing the Humber at Hessle. This is also where you can pick up the A63, to join the start of the M62. Once on the motorway, you’ve got a great link right across the country to Liverpool via Leeds, Huddersfield, and Manchester. The A165 takes you northeast and up the coast to Scarborough. Cottingham Station is on the Yorkshire Coast Line for trains into Hull, with York, Sheffield, Doncaster, and Scarborough amongst its destinations. There’s a direct train to London King’s Cross from Hull. In addition, there are regular bus services into the city, to Beverley, and to Hessle. Humberside Airport, with domestic and European destinations, is 19 miles to the south with a direct route on the A164 and A15.

Local facilities

Cottingham is home to some of Hull University’s halls of residence, and that has added to the local area in a very positive way. Hallgate and King Street are its main shopping areas. There’s a good range of shops, a fantastic local market,  supermarkets, convenience stores, cafés, and places to eat out. The Cottingham Parks Golf & Leisure Club includes a swimming pool and a health club, there are a couple of golf clubs, and the King George V Playing Fields, along with the Millbeck Wildlife Area, add to the green spaces that the town provides. Cottingham has four primary schools, and Cottingham High School is the local secondary school.

City side

With Hull’s city centre only 5 miles away, you’ve got all the back up you might need in terms of high street shopping, culture, entertainment, and nightlife. Hull’s Old Town is the city’s historic quarter, where you’ll find pubs, restaurants, and museums. Queen Victoria Square, at the heart of the city, is home to City Hall, the Maritime Museum, and the Ferens Art Gallery. The Deep is a huge aquarium and sealife centre in a spectacular quayside setting. Whatever your interests and whatever age your children are, this is a great city for all the family.
