Falmouth

Who wouldn’t want to live near the sea? Falmouth is one of South Cornwall’s prettiest coastal towns. It’s just south of the cathedral city of Truro, on the mouth of the River Fal. This is prime sailing territory and even if you prefer to stay on dry land, it’s the most picturesque of settings for your new home. Falmouth University and the renowned Falmouth School of Art, along with the visitors that come here on holiday, all add to the colourful character of this lovely town.

Living here

Falmouth is a town that’s got its work/life balance right, and you’ll soon get a feel of that when you live here. It seems that all roads lead to the harbour or the beach – and nobody’s complaining about that. The high street has a great mix of familiar stores, independent shops, galleries, cafés and restaurants, and Truro is a great back-up for high street shopping on a bigger scale.

Getting around

Falmouth is off the A39, the main route out of Truro.  It becomes the A394 at Tremough – the main university campus – continuing to Penzance in the far west.  The A30 and the A390 are the main road routes east. There are three train stations in Falmouth, connecting Falmouth Docks, Penmere and Truro for mainline services to Exeter and on to London. Falmouth Town station is right in the centre and just a few minutes’ walk to the waterfront. There’s also a very convenient Shuttle Bus service, a 20-minute loop linking the town and the coast.

Going to School

It may feel like being on holiday here, but children still have to go to school!  This family orientated place has plenty of primary schools. Falmouth School covers secondary education and students can also opt to attend Truro and Penwith College for further education, one of the best colleges in the UK. For adult education and part-time courses, you've got a university on the doorstep.

Enjoying yourself

It makes sense to start with the sea. Falmouth has some gorgeous beaches – Gyllyngvase, Castle Beach, Swanpool, and Maenporth. You’re spoilt for choice and breakfast at one of the beach cafes is a bit of an institution. Hop on a ferry over to St Mawes for even more golden sand.  Falmouth’s a great starting point for the South West Coastal Path, and the stunning scenery of the Cornish coast will never disappoint.
