Harlow was created as a new town and it’s continued to grow with the times. Today it’s still very much up to date, very family-friendly and it’s a very popular commuter base on the Essex/Hertfordshire border. It enjoys great connections with Greater and Central London, with the M11 on the doorstep and the M25 less than 8 miles away. The area’s key towns and the county town of Chelmsford are easy to reach, and you can be in the heart of the capital or the heart of the countryside for work and play.
The M11, the A10, the A414 and the A1184 are all important routes for the town. Factor in the M25 which is a short distance to the south, and you’re away. Stansted Airport is 15 miles to the northeast via the M11 and if you need to fly from Heathrow, it's an hour’s drive away off the M25. The town’s two train stations link with London Liverpool Street and Cambridge. Harlow is a regional hub for travel by bus, with routes that include Stansted Airport and Epping, where you can join the London Underground Central Line. There’s also a bus link to Heathrow Airport via Hertford and Watford.
To follow on from the wide range of primary schools, Harlow has six state secondary schools. Stewards Academy, Mark Hall Academy, St Mark’s West Essex Catholic School, Burnt Mill Academy, Passmores Academy and BMAT STEM Academ - a state-of-the-art centre of excellence for a STEM-based curriculum.
The town’s main shopping centres are The Harvey Centre - which includes a cinema and places to eat - and The Water Gardens. You’ve also got the St James Retail Park, Staple Tye Shopping Centre and Broad Walk Shopping Centre and there’s a development plan afoot for much more. Harlow Town Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, within walking distance of both the town centre and the station. All the main supermarkets have a presence here and there’s a Tesco Superstore to the north of the town. For sport and leisure, there are excellent facilities at the Harlow Leisurezone, the Mark Hall Sports Centre and the Great Parndon Sports & Activity Centre.
All the family will love the Rye House Kart Raceway, the Paradise Wildlife Park, and adventures in the Hatfield Forest Nature Reserve and in Epping Forest. Just over the border, Hertford is a historic market town with ancient buildings and atmospheric shopping streets, and you can head straight up the M11 to Cambridge.
