The motorway network of the North West puts the main cities and towns within easy reach. Manchester is 14 miles away, Wigan is 7 miles away, Warrington is 10 miles away, and Liverpool is 25 miles away. The M6 and M62 are the closest to Leigh, at Junction 21A, Birchwood. They then link with the M57, M58, M60 and M56. Manchester Airport is 20 miles southeast, with a journey time by car of about half an hour. Liverpool John Lennon Airport is much the same distance but takes a little longer to drive to. Mainline train services can be picked up at Newton-le-Willows, Ashton-in-Makerfield, Hindley, Westhoughton and Atherton, however Leigh has a busy bus station with a huge range of bus services throughout the area, including to the famous Trafford Centre.
There are several primary schools in the town, and Leigh’s two main secondary schools are Bedford High School and The Westleigh School. Other schools in the catchment area are in Atherton, Lowton, Golborne, and Astley. For Post-16 education, Wigan and Leigh College has five campus locations in Wigan, Leigh, and Greater Manchester.
The Spinning Gate Shopping Centre is the main retail hub in the town centre, alongside a mix of high street brands and independent shops in the town. There’s also an Asda, ALDI, Tesco Extra, and Lidl. Out of town, the Trafford Centre is Greater Manchester’s very well-known venue for shopping, eating, leisure and entertainment, all in one place. It’s just 12 miles away, on the 126 Leigh to Trafford Centre bus route.
Two of the great local amenities here are the Leigh Sports Village and the Pennington Flash Country Park. The Sports Village is to the southwest of the town centre. It’s a state-of-the-art facility for the whole community, with a 12,000-capacity stadium which is home to the Leigh Centurions professional rugby league team, and Manchester United Women’s U23s and U19s teams. The country park gives everyone a chance to step back and take a breather. It’s great for children to let off steam, it’s a nature reserve with a lake for wildlife, there’s golf, horse-riding, sailing, and windsurfing.
