Musselburgh

Musselburgh has some very old claims to fame. It’s where the oldest racecourse and the oldest golf club in Scotland can be found, and they’re still going strong. It’s also thought of as Scotland’s oldest town. With its popularity as a residential area close to Edinburgh, today’s town is also a forward-looking home to young families and young professionals who want to be close to the capital. There are spectacular views across the Firth of Forth, a picturesque harbour, and Musselburgh and Fisherrow’s sandy beaches, all giving the town another dimension and adding to its appeal.

Travel plans

Musselburgh is by-passed by the A1 as it heads into Edinburgh, though the main east-west route through the town is still very popular and can be very busy. Edinburgh city centre is just 6 miles to the west, so this is a great base for commuting. It’s a busy route and so if you prefer the train, you can be at Edinburgh Waverley station on average in just 8 minutes. Heading away from Edinburgh, the A1 takes a coastal route all the way to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The A720 is The City of Edinburgh Bypass, connecting with the M8 for Glasgow, it’s right on your doorstep. Though Edinburgh Airport is on the far side of the city, the Bypass means than you can be there in under half an hour. East Coast Buses and Lothian Buses run frequent services to and from Musselburgh and around East Lothian.

Local shopping

The town has plenty of local shops and convenience stores and just down the road, there’s the Fort Kinnaird retail mall with entertainment venues as well as high street brands. It’s Edinburgh’s leading shopping centre and it’s really close to Musselburgh and just off the A1. There are the usual supermarkets too, including a Tesco Extra and an Asda Supercentre. Something a bit different is a new monthly farmers’ market which is going to be based in the Stables Courtyard at Newhailes House & Garden.

Local schools

As well as several primary schools, Musselburgh has a Grammar School and an Independent School, the Loretto Junior and Senior School. Holy Rood High School, Gracemount High School and St David’s RC High School are all within easy reach as options for older pupils.

City and coast

Having the best of both worlds is so true here. You’ve got the fantastic city life of Edinburgh, its culture and history, its city centre shopping and nightlife, as well as the beaches of East Lothian – unspoilt, sandy, great in the summer and windswept in the winter. Musselburgh’s own beaches, close to the harbour are a ready-made day out without a journey.
