Charles Church

Stewarton is a medium sized town with its roots in the textile industry, but actually made famous for the traditional Scottish hats that it produced. An annual gala celebrates what has become known as Scotland’s ‘Bonnet Toun’ – it’s a great excuse for everyone to join in with a cheerful local event. Today it serves the rural community, with the area’s roads radiating from its town centre. Stewarton has become a popular place to live as it’s so easy to get to Glasgow, Irvine, and Kilmarnock, has good local amenities including a train station, and lovely rural surroundings. A new home here will be well-connected, well-placed and will be in a welcoming community.

Living here

The town centre has a good mix of shops and there’s a Co-op, Sainsbury’s, and Aldi too. Everything feels quite central so it’s a convenient place to do your shopping. The Stewarton sports centre, now named the Rose Reilly Sports Centre after the town’s trailblazing World Cup winner, is your local leisure facility where there are activities to keep all the family fit.

Getting around

The M77 bypasses the town just over 3 miles away, so you’ve got a very convenient route on your doorstep but not through your town. Stewarton is a meeting point for the main roads through this rural part of Ayrshire. The B778 runs east to west, the B769 – the Old Glasgow Road – runs from the northeast to southwest and the A735 runs north south. You can be in central Glasgow in about 45 minutes by car, or in 30 minutes if you catch the fast train from Stewarton Station. Kilmarnock is only 5 miles to the south for additional amenities, and Irvine – on the coast – is 10 miles to the west.

Going to school

Whatever age your children are, they’ll have a good head start close to home. There are three schools in the town. Lainshaw and Nether Robertland Primary Schools, and the Stewarton Academy is the secondary school.

Enjoying yourself

The Galleon Centre in Kilmarnock just 5 miles south, is great for ice skating, swimming, bowling, and a Family Fun Night every Saturday. If you prefer to get out into the fresh air for a local walk, the Dean Castle Country Park and Lainshaw Woods & the Annick Water – a 5-mile circular route along the river – are close by. Ayrshire has some great beaches along its coastline, so you’ve always got that option for a family day out.
