Westhoughton
Westhoughton is officially part of Greater Manchester but it’s got a firm connection with Lancashire too. As the town grew, it brought together a group of villages and the different parts of the town still have their own special identity, ensuring a sense of community for a new home here. Westhoughton is halfway between Wigan and Bolton, has easy access into Manchester and Merseyside and to the motorway network for travel further afield.

Westhoughton’s location means that you’ve got convenient public transport services on hand. There are frequent train and bus services into Manchester, 12 miles away. It takes an average 35 minutes to get to Manchester Piccadilly by train so that’s a bonus if you need to commute or if you want to spend the day there with friends. Each area of the town has a range of local shops, convenience stores and food outlets, and you’ve got the usual supermarkets for your big shop.
Getting around
No problem here, you’ve got good connections and direct routes from the town. The M61 Manchester to Preston motorway passes the northeast edge of town. It joins the M60 around the north of Manchester and then the M62 all the way to Huddersfield and Leeds. The A58 runs through the town to Wigan and from there it’s an easy connection to the M6, or you can continue west on the M58 into Liverpool. Follow the A58 to the east and you’ll join the A676 into Bolton.

Football clubs aside, these two cities compete with their famous city-centre shopping and entertainment venues. Manchester is the closest of course, but a couple of hours on the train to Liverpool Lime Street is well worth it for a different day out.
A change of scenery
We all need this from time to time and with the M61 on your doorstep, you can be in Lancashire’s lovely countryside around the village of Rivington, just 7 miles to the north, in no time. Stretch your legs on the circular walk to Rivington Pike for great views over the West Pennine Moors. Or you can stroll around the Rivington Reservoir, part of the Rivington Country Park.
