Travel and transport

Barnsley is in an ideal location for commuters. The M1 is just a few minutes away, providing easy access to Leeds and Wakefield to the north, and Sheffield and Rotherham to the south. Other convenient local routes include the A635 to Doncaster and the A628 to Manchester. Barnsley Interchange is a combined bus and rail station in the town centre, providing direct routes to many destinations in the region and nationwide.

Barnsley has numerous high street shops, services and eateries around the town centre and in the Alhambra Shopping Centre. The town has undergone a multi-million pound regeneration project, with a brand new shopping and entertainment venue, The Glass Works. Situated in a prime position in front of the train station, the Glass Works offers a wide range of popular brands, restaurants, a bowling alley, Laser Quest, soft play centre and a 13-screen cinema. Markets are a huge part of Barnsley’s identity. Inside the Glass Works you’ll find the revamped indoor market. With over 100 stalls spread across two floors, it’s a fantastic way to support local businesses. There’s also an outdoor market, which takes place 4 days a week.

There are a large number of primary and secondary schools to choose from in the Barnsley area. The town also has two Further Education colleges, for study up to degree level.
