Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside are its major urban areas, but this is also a region of expansive farmland, great long beaches and remote National Parks.

Durham is the smallest city but it’s big on history, while Newcastle upon Tyne heads up Tyneside, and Sunderland heads up Wearside – the largest metropolitan areas in the North East.

For history, Durham cathedral and castle stand proudly high above the River Wear. For an amazing feat of engineering, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge Spans the River Tyne. For a towering art installation, the Angel of the North spreads its wings above Gateshead.

Auf Wiedersehen Pet and Vera aren’t the only dramas that belong to the North West. The dramatic scenery of the  Northumberland National Park, High Force waterfall, the North Pennines and the Durham Heritage Coast steal the show.

Things to do in the North East

For family-friendly beaches head for South Shields, for deserted beaches head for the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and for wild walking you can head up into the North Pennines and the Northumberland National Park. For everything else, Gateshead’s Metro Centre has everything right on the spot.
