Travel and transport

The M6 is crucial to the working lives of Carlisle and the towns of North Cumbria. Other convenient road routes include the A7, A595, A689, and A69. Together these routes keep Carlisle well connected with the Lake District, Yorkshire, Humberside and the North Pennines. Carlisle Station, offers regular services to Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as a direct service to London Euston, with many major destinations in-between. There are also excellent links by train to Newcastle, the Metrocentre at Gateshead and the East Coast.

The Lanes Shopping Centre is the largest retail venue in Cumbria and the Borders, and Carlisle's city centre is home to an excellent range of shops and services. For leisure and entertainment there is a Vue cinema, a bowling alley, two golf clubs, the Urban Adventure high ropes experience, Pools Swimming & Health Centre, the Eden Rock Climbing Wall, and a dry ski slope. The Sands Centre, is an impressive leisure and entertainment venue offering live entertainment, gym and exercise facilities, a sports hall and a climbing wall.
