It’s a bonus to live in a county town as there’s always going to be a real mix of history, culture, and modern-day amenities. Shrewsbury fits snugly into a loop of the River Severn, so it’s got a natural backdrop too. The black and white Tudor houses, cobbled streets, castle, and huge riverside park are at the heart of the town, but it’s a place that’s well up to date for life today and a lovely location for your new home. There’s a great atmosphere, and a thriving visitor economy to support a lovely range of independent shops, bars, and cafés.
Even in an historic town you’ll need to get on with the essentials of day-to-day life. Shrewsbury has got a good range of supermarkets: Tesco, Aldi, Sainsbury’s, Iceland Foods, the Co-op, and plenty of other convenience stores. The Market Hall is a great source of fresh local produce too. The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is to the east of the town, the train station is very central, and for fitness and health, the Quarry Swimming and Fitness Centre and the Shrewsbury Sports Village will keep you on track.
Shrewsbury is just over 30 miles from Wolverhampton and the main routes that take you into the industrial heart of the Midlands are the A5, M54 and M6. The scenic A458 via Bridgnorth is an alternative route to the southeast of Shrewsbury. The A49 is the main road to the south, via Ludlow and Leominster and on to Hereford and the A458 takes you west into Wales. There are good routes north as well, connecting Shrewsbury with Wrexham, Chester, Whitchurch, Stoke-on-Trent, and Crewe. The town’s train station is an important central hub for services into Wales as well as the Midlands. Arriva buses operate services around Shrewsbury, and to Telford, Oswestry and some of the other outlying towns and villages – a great option as parking can be at a premium in this historic town.
With all its history and culture, Shrewsbury hasn’t forgotten energetic children. The Quarry is the riverside park, playground, and splash park. Cineworld Cinema will keep youngsters occupied on a rainy day, and Jump In Trampoline Park Shrewsbury is great fun whether you are watching or joining in. AMF Bowling is all round family entertainment. Climbing the Walls is a start of the art indoor climbing centre for the very adventurous.
