Getting around
Lowestoft is right on the edge of the East of England but it’s easy to get around. It’s 10 miles south of Great Yarmouth and 13 miles north of Southwold, two very different coastal towns. The A12, A146 and A47 are the main road routes in and out of the town. The A12 connects you with Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford before heading into Greater London and joining the M25. The A146 takes you to Beccles, a wonderful market town just 10 miles inland, and then on to Norwich. The A47 is the coastal road to Great Yarmouth. The town’s train station is at the end of the East Suffolk Line from Ipswich and the Wherry Line from Norwich. For flights, Norwich International Airport is a very convenient 24 miles away. The local bus services operator is First Eastern Counties Buses, and National Express operate services to and from the town as well.

There are various shopping areas throughout the town and you’ve also got three shopping centres, The Britten Centre, The Gateway Retail Park and North Quay Retail Park. Lowestoft has a Tesco Superstore to the north, a Morrisons to the south, and a Lidl, Co-op and M & S Foodhall closer to the centre. The Waterlane Leisure Centre has a gym, fitness centre, swimming pool and sports hall so there’s something there for everyone. Family fun isn’t just for holiday-makers – the Pleasurewood Hills Family Theme Park is on your doorstep too.
Out of town
If you trace the River Waveney back inland away from the waterways of Lake Lothing and the Inner Harbour, you’ll quickly find a very different landscape. Oulton Broad is just 2 miles out of central Lowestoft and is known as the Gateway to the Broads. The area is a haven for walkers, cyclists, bird watches and water sports lovers. Head south down the coast and you’ll be in Suffolk’s Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the historic seaside towns or Southwold, Aldeburgh and Orford. Inland, the ancient market towns of Beccles and Bungay are like stepping back in time.
