Saltcoats
There’s a great outlook in Saltcoats - across the Firth of Clyde to the mountains of Arran. Glasgow is within easy commuting distance, so your new home here will have three of Scotland’s iconic landmarks in its sights. You can catch a ferry to the island or to the Kintyre Peninsular from neighbouring Ardrossan, so you’ll be well-connected in more ways than one. Add the wonderful sandy beach of South Bay, the picturesque harbour and even the wind turbines in the hills behind the town, and you certainly have a town with a view.

Living in Saltcoats
Living here
You’ll have a choice of national supermarkets here; Sainsbury’s, ALDI and Tesco, with an Asda in Ardrossan. There are plenty of other smaller convenience stores and local shops, especially around the harbour area. For fitness and fun, the Auchenharvie Leisure Centre – which has North Ayrshire’s only ice rink - and the St Matthew’s Community Sports Hub will keep you on the go. Premier Leisure is great for cinema and soft play on a rainy day.
Getting around
There are two key road routes to and from Saltcoats, the coastal A78 and the cross-country A737. Both will take you to Glasgow, though you can also join the M77 at Kilmarnock. The coast road is a stunning route, taking you along the edge of the Firth of Forth and the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, but better for pleasure than for commuting. The town has a train station too, with an average journey time into Glasgow of 40 minutes and to Irvine of about 30 minutes. Ferry travel is part and parcel of life in the Scottish Isles and Arran is no exception. You can catch a ferry to Brodick from Ardrossan, or to Campbeltown, to save yourself the long road journey to Kintyre. From Saltcoats to Glasgow Airport is just 22 miles on the A737 so that’s a bonus for business trips and holidays. Bus travel is a good option too and Stagecoach West Scotland has a hub in Ardrossan.
Going to school
Between the two of them, Saltcoats and Ardrossan have a great range of primary schools. The catchment area's secondary schools are Auchenharvie Academy, Ardrossan Academy and St Matthew’s Academy.
The city and the sea
What a winning combination. Glasgow gives you big city living, history, entertainment, shopping, a colourful arts scene and a colourful nightlife too. The coast along Irvine Bay gives you sandy beaches, fabulous views across the Firth of Clyde and family days out right on your doorstep.
