Selby
Selby is in a great location for commuting into Leeds, Wakefield and York. It’s moved on from its industrial past and now the arable farmland around it is the driving force for the local economy. The magnificent Selby Abbey and the River Ouse are its enduring landmarks, and the Selby Canal is now a popular walking and cycling route from a town where longboats have replaced shipbuilding.

Selby has got plenty of amenities for family life. There are two shopping centres; The Market Cross Shopping Centre and the Three Lakes Retail Park, in addition to a good range of independent shops in the area around the Abbey. For supermarkets you’ve got Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Morrisons. The historic Selby Market and the Farmers’ Market contribute tradition and atmosphere to the town. Selby Park in the town centre is a lovely open space for meeting up with friends and family on a sunny day.
Getting around
The town is bypassed by the A63 which is a useful link to the A19, the A1(M) and the M62. This network of roads puts the area’s main towns within easy reach. The train station runs services with TransPennine Express, Northern and Hull Trains. The average journey time to Leeds or York is 30 minutes – a very reasonable commute – with plenty of services each day.
Going to school
There are several primary schools to choose from and for secondary education pupils have the option to go to Selby High School, or for sixth form, to Selby College.
Enjoying yourself
Leeds and York are great for a day out, a night out, for city shopping and for family entertainment. Selby’s got a golf course just outside the town off the A63 and for a different sort of outside activity, the Skipwith Common National Nature Reserve is to the north of the town. Back at home, the Selby Leisure Centre will get you going with activities for fun and fitness.
