College students given taste of life in the construction industry

17 February 2026

Aspiring electricians were given a tour of the new Charles Church at Crownfield Court development in Windlesham to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

The Level 1 Electrical Installation students from Guildford College were given a tour of the site by the five-star Thames Valley team, allowing them to see the different stages of construction.

Rob Jones, Area Manager for Clarkson Evans, the UK's leading electrical contractor, explained the role of electrical installers in the new build process, and how the role is constantly evolving as technology and requirements advance. He also offered careers advice and answered questions on securing apprenticeship roles to continue their training.

He said: “It was a pleasure to meet the students and I hope the visit has given them inspiration for the future. With green technology advancing rapidly, now is an exciting time to be an electrician working in the new build sector.”

Dr Al Pinkerton, MP for Surrey Heath, joined the visit and said: “It was great to meet the amazing students from Guildford College, who are all contemplating going on to apprenticeships in the years ahead. We need this group of young people to be coming into construction, bringing their skills and the latest thinking to this industry.”

Matthew Coe, Construction Director for Charles Church Thames Valley, said: “There is a national skills shortage in the construction industry, and we wanted to use National Apprenticeship Week as an opportunity to highlight careers within the housebuilding sector.

“We hope this visit has inspired some of the students and encouraged them to look at apprenticeships in the future, giving them a blend of college-based learning and site experience and ensuring they have the skills needed to start out on a successful career in the industry.”

Olena Nakyvaiko, of Activate Learning, supported students during the visit and said: “Thank you to Charles Church and Clarkson Evans for giving the learners an introduction into new build housing and the role they could play in the future.”

National Apprenticeship Week runs through to Sunday 15th February and is a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
