Whittlesey

Whittlesey is one of Cambridgeshire’s old market towns with its heritage going back to the Domesday Book. It’s six miles from Peterborough so it’s well-connected and has great amenities on hand as well as its own local facilities.

In true market town tradition there’s a popular market every Friday and this adds to the sense of community - the Market Square is the heart of the town. A new home here will have the best of both worlds – a friendly small-town atmosphere close to large town amenities.

Living in Whittlesey

Living here

There are good quality local schools in Whittlesey which is one of the reasons it's a popular place for families to live. There are three primary and nursery schools, and the Sir Harry Smith Community College has academy status for 11 to 18-year-olds. It’s Ofsted rated ‘Good’ and is seen as an asset to the town. There’s a range of local shops though for a larger choice, people pop into Peterborough. The Queensgate Shopping Centre there has got over 100 stores and plenty of parking and there’s a Tesco Extra, Morrison’s, Waitrose and Sainsbury’s there too.

Getting around

This is Cambridgeshire’s rural Fenland and a network of country roads link to the main A routes for the area – the A141, A15 and A16. The A1(M) is to the west of Peterborough and you’d take the A1139 from Peterborough to join it. Whittlesey station is a convenient link to the mainline rail services of Ely and Peterborough. The fast train from Peterborough to London King's Cross takes an hour.

Activities for children

Whittlesey Museum, the Lattersey Nature Reserve and the Kings Dyke Nature Reserve are good for young families. The Manor Leisure Centre has different activities to choose from, as well as a soft play area for little ones. Peterborough’s Showcase Cinema de Lux is on the Whittlesey side of town and Planet Ice is another option to keep the family entertained.

The Fens

You’ll have a unique landscape to explore on your doorstep, the Cambridgeshire Fens. It’s about 200 square miles of very flat farmland stretching all the way from Peterborough to The Wash. Whittlesey is one of four market towns in this peaceful area. It’s a great area for cycling as the roads are so quiet and for spotting the wildlife that thrives here. It doesn't take long to reach the stunning Norfolk coast either.
