Heybridge

Heybridge is a partner and neighbour to the larger town of Maldon in Essex. The two towns sit side by side and share the wide estuary of the River Blackwater and the historic Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation Canal.

Both towns are popular with commuters as Chelmsford is just 12 miles away and Colchester, one of the UK’s oldest towns, is less than 20 miles away. Maldon tops up the facilities and amenities on offer in Heybridge, so between the two places, everything is on hand for daily life including a huge Tesco Extra.

Chelmsford and Colchester are great for shopping, leisure and entertainment or just a day out with friends if you want a change of scenery. Returning home to a quieter environment will always be a treat too.

Road map

Essex has the advantage of having both rural and urban areas and there are some key routes across the county. The A12 is within easy reach of Heybridge, which you can join at Hatford Peverel just 5.5 miles away. From there it’s a 14-minute drive into the centre of Chelmsford. For onward journeys, this is where you can connect with the A130, the A131 and the A414. There are local train stations at Hatfield Peverel and Witham so you can leave your car there and head into Chelmsford or Colchester by train.

Local leisure

Heybridge and Maldon enjoy the Maldon Golf Club at Beeleigh, the Blackwater Leisure Centre and the Blackwater Sailing Club. Northey Island is managed by the National Trust, and as with Osea Island, is reached by a tidal causeway. For wonderful views across the estuary to the islands, Promenade Park is the place to start. Further up the estuary towards the sea, the Blackwater Estuary National Nature Reserve, Tollesbury Wick and RSPB Old Hall Marshes all celebrate the wildlife of this watery landscape.

Local services

Heybridge has all the basics to keep you going, an Asda, a small Co-op supermarket, several takeaways, a chemist, vet and dentist. There’s a Tesco Extra just on the outskirts as you head into Maldon. Schools include the Heybridge Co-Operative Academy for 11 – 16-year-olds and Heybridge Primary School for your youngsters, with further options in Maldon.
