Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is a small town by national standards, but it’s Norfolk’s third largest. This seaside town is well known and well visited for its Golden Mile and golden beaches. Behind the scenes and out to sea, it’s been working hard in its role in the Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft Enterprise Zone, bringing the business of wind energy to town, making the most of the North Sea and boosting the town’s economy alongside tourism. As well as the coast, Great Yarmouth’s other natural landmark is the Norfolk Broads, a unique landscape of waterways and conservation areas to explore from your new home.

Living in Great Yarmouth

In and out of town

The A47 and A143 are Great Yarmouth’s main road routes, connecting it with Norwich, 20 miles to the west, and Bungay, Diss and Bury St Edmunds to the southwest. The A47 continues south down the coast to Lowestoft via Gorleston-on-Sea. You can get the train to Norwich, and from there connect to mainline services including to London Liverpool Street, a journey that takes just under two and a half hours. Norwich Airport, for domestic and European flights, is 26 miles away, a drive time of about 40 minutes. Local bus and National Express bus services operate from the town centre and are a good way to get around this rural county.

At school

After primary school, students have the Great Yarmouth Charter Academy, the Lynn Grove Academy, the Cliff Park Ormiston Academy, The Edward Worlledge Ormiston Academy and the Ormiston Venture Academy, for 11 – 16 years. The East Norfolk Sixth Form College is in the Gorleston-on-Sea area of Great Yarmouth.

Going shopping

Great Yarmouth’s shops are all within walking distance of the town centre and central Market Place. Independent shops and high street stores can be found in The Rows, King Street, Northgate Street, Regent Street and in the pedestrianised Regent Road. The Market Gate Shopping Centre is the focal point, and for fun and treats, the seafront shops, cafés and fish stalls are a bonus in the summer season. For a day trip and a different shopping experience, historic Norwich is the place to go. For day-to-day essentials, there’s an Asda Superstore, a Tesco Extra, Morrisons, ALDI and Lidl.
