Wakefield

Wakefield is to the south of Leeds in West Yorkshire. It’s in good company along with Huddersfield, Halifax, Bradford and Pontefract, though it stands out from the crowd quite literally, with cathedral city status and the tallest spire in Yorkshire. Your new home here will have city-sized amenities, excellent transport links and the sense of community that Yorkshire is famous for. This is one of the UK’s important manufacturing areas, with infrastructure and amenities to reflect that.

Living in Wakefield

Living here

Every checklist for a place to live includes shopping, schools, leisure and entertainment. Wakefield has got all these options to hand, with city shopping in Leeds as a treat for a day out.  In addition to the central square in the city centre, there are several shopping centres and retail parks, some of which have been recently refurbished as part of the city regeneration plan. These include Trinity Walk, the Ridings, the Beck Retail Park and the Cathedral Retail Park.

Getting around

Wakefield has great access to the motorway network. The M1 runs north to south, connecting Leeds with London, and the M62 takes you east to west, connecting Hull, Leeds, Manchester and Liverpool. There are two stations for train travel and Wakefield’s Westgate station is a mainline station on the Leeds branch of the East Coast Main Line. The average journey time into central Leeds is under 20 minutes. Arriva buses operate throughout the city and the Wakefield Freecitybus is an innovative circular service around the city centre. Leeds Bradford Airport is on the far side of Leeds, 20 miles away.

Something a bit different

Canals were always essential to industrial age towns and the Wakefield Waterfront is a canal-side regeneration project that includes a great art gallery, The Hepworth Wakefield, to celebrate the city’s famous sculptor. This is said to be the largest purpose-built gallery to open in the UK since the 1960’s so it’s quite a feather in the cap for Wakefield. 7 miles out of town, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park is another local landmark, with over 100 world-class sculptures, set in 500 acres of beautiful landscape
