Brentwood students home in on their construction careers with Charles Church

Students from the Brentwood Learning Partnership recently gained an insight into the workings of an active new build housing development, thanks to the team at Charles Church’s luxury Weald Park development in the town.
The nine pupils, aged 15 years old, are currently studying for their Higher Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment Level Two course at Sawyers Hall College with the aim to undertake a professional career within this sector. They have been learning through theory and practical classes about the Built Environment design process and methods of construction and facilities management, so when Charles Church’s site manager offered the College the chance to take a tour of its development and see what they’ve learnt being used in practice, the students jumped at the chance.
Rob Haddrell, site manager for Weald Park has been with Charles Church for eight years and started his career in the construction industry as a ground worker. He states: “In the early stages of my career, I found observing to be one of the most useful ways to learn about the sector, which is why we thought this would be a useful tool for these students.
“As several of the properties are either finished, built to roof or are at foundation level we were able to give the youngsters a broad overview our development. We were able to highlight the various disciplines from brick laying, carpentry and plastering, plus the role of a site manager like myself overseeing the build.”
Rob Griffin; Head of Faculty at Sawyers Hall College, added: “This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to gain important knowledge about their chosen career path and I’d like to thank Rob and his team at Charles Church for hosting us.
“As part of the student’s studies we have visited a number of commercial projects previously but not a housing development, so the students were all very keen to find out as much as possible about this important area of the industry and what goes into making a family house or apartment block. All nine students wish to pursue a career in the Construction Built Environment sector and I know that this trip and discussions with the site manager will bring their learning to life and inspire them to consider housebuilding as their chosen career.”
Charles Church’s Weald Park development is located off Weald Road in Brentwood. The development hosts a collection of luxury two bedroom apartments and three, four and five bedroom houses, with prices starting from £269,950.
