Retirement celebrations for Newcastle based site manager
17 January 2011
The site manager working at one of the most popular new homes developments in Staffordshire has hung up his hard hat and construction boots after retiring following 34 years of service with executive home builder, Charles Church.
Barry Smith, who works at Charles Church’s Milliners Green development on Keele Road in Newcastle, enjoyed retirement celebrations with his fellow workers and aptly, tucked into a house-shaped celebratory cake, baked by fellow development worker, sales executive June Cyples.
He started his career as an apprentice bricklayer working for Linford Construction in Cannock before moving to Clark Homes in Lichfield. Following a string of company takeovers and acquisitions, Barry has found himself working for one of the country’s most exclusive, successful housebuilders and during the two and a half years he has worked at the Milliners Green development, he has been responsible for overseeing the construction of apartments and traditional homes for sale in Newcastle.
Commenting on his achievement, Barry said: “The past 34 years has flown by and I put this down to having a job I absolutely love. I have made lots of friends during my years here and whilst I’ll be sad to say goodbye, I’m relishing the chance to spend more time on my other passion – riding my motorbike!”
Self proclaimed ‘born again biker’ Barry lives in Cheslyn Hay, has been married for 42 years and has two sons.
