Schools fly the flag for Eco achievements
18 May 2011
Pupils at Fox Covert and Fox Covert RC Primary Schools were able to fully celebrate achieving ‘Green Flag’ status for their eco efforts after housebuilder Charles Church donated a flag pole to raise the symbolic award.
An official flag raising ceremony was attended by students and teachers from both schools, along with a host of representatives from organisations, including local links such as Friends of Corstorphine Hill and local businesses and the Council, who have helped the schools to attain ‘Green Flag’ status.
Charles Church sales executive, Ruth Watson was also on hand, and was assisted in raising the flag by Julia Gray P3, Fox Covert Primary and Emma Dickey P3, Fox Covert RC Primary.
To achieve the prestigious ‘Green Flag’ Award, the schools have been working tirelessly on a number of eco initiatives, undertaking projects on composting, litter, saving energy and creating a new school pond, planned by an eco committee of students, which has representatives from every class, to ensure the projects run smoothly.
Charles Church, which is building its flagship Edinburgh development, Hillwood View, near the school, was quick to offer its services in donating and erecting the flag pole to help formally recognise the schools’ fantastic achievement which is the culmination of years of work, having been awarded the Bronze certificate in March 2006 and the Silver certificate in February 2007.
Ruth comments: “I was absolutely delighted to have the honour of raising the flag on behalf of the schools and Charles Church. What the students have achieved is fantastic and I am sure that they will take all that they have learnt to continue on with the green initiatives and environmental ways of living that they have adopted in recent years.”
Tonya Thomson and Gill Conway, Eco- Co-ordinators from Fox Covert Schools add: “The pupils, parents and staff are thrilled that the work done in the school has been recognised and that we have been awarded the Green Flag, and appreciate and thank all those who have helped and supported us to achieve this status, and will continue to work together with our local community to continue promoting eco awareness.”
