Gateshead
Gateshead has a great partnership with Newcastle-upon-Tyne. They face each other across the River Tyne and share the connection of the iconic Gateshead Millennium Bridge. They’ve both got the huge Metro Centre and the towering Angel of the North in their sights.
The town’s Team Valley Trading Estate was initially the largest commercial estate in the UK and its still a key player in the town’s economy and that of the Northeast. If you want to be close to the action for work and play, this great town is the right place for your new home.

Road and rail
Gateshead has the backup of a great infrastructure. The A1 and the A1(M) meet in town and between them, they are the driving force all the way from London to Edinburgh. The A184 heads to Sunderland to the east and connects with the A19 for Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough. The A692 takes you cross-country to Consett and the Pennines in the west. Train travel is vital here too, with a partnership of stations and services operated by National Rail and Tyne & Wear Metro. The Gateshead Interchange is the busiest bus station in Tyne & Wear, serving the town well for the route into Newcastle and the rest of this on-the-go area of the Northeast. It’s just 9 miles to Newcastle Airport for domestic and European flights, for business and for pleasure.
Retail and recreation
The impressive Metro Centre is the first place that comes to mind, but Gateshead has a busy town centre of its own. The Trinity Square shopping centre brings together retail, restaurants and recreation in one place, just south of the world-famous Tyne Bridge. Newcastle-upon-Tyne has its own colourful reputation for shopping, entertainment and nightlife and that’s good for Gateshead too. At the heart of Gateshead, the Saltwell Park is a 55-acre opportunity to switch off and have some breathing space. There are gardens, woods, a boating lake, bowling greens, a visitor centre and a café. For a different change of scenery, you can take the family to the coast and enjoy the huge stretch of golden sand at the beach at South Shields.
Term-time
There are nine secondary schools in total, covering all the different areas of Gateshead. Gateshead College offers A levels, vocational courses, adult education, apprenticeships and access to higher education. Together with Newcastle University and Northumbria University, the college adds its own student life to Gateshead, creating a great community for young people.
