Hartlepool
Hartlepool is a town that has managed to balance its maritime heritage and its future with today’s industry and leisure. The port gets down to business and is home to some big companies, while the Marina offers a welcome break from the working week, providing a home for private boats and yachts.
Tourism is an important part of the town’s economy too, and with its long sandy beaches, Hartlepool has long been a popular seaside destination in the North East. These different faces of the town give your new home a local work-life balance to make the most of.

Communication networks
For travel by car, the two main town routes are the A179 and the A689. Both these roads link with the A19 for York to the south and Sunderland to the north. For the county’s major north-south route, Junction 60 of the A1(M) is about 20 miles to the west. There are hourly services from Hartlepool’s train station to Sunderland, Newcastle and Middlesbrough and there’s a direct service to London King’s Cross, taking about three and a half hours. The town’s bus services are provided by Stagecoach North East, Arriva North East and Go North East. For your business or holiday flights, Newcastle International Airport is just over 30 miles away to the north.
Going shopping
Middleton Grange Shopping Centre is the town’s main retail complex but there are plenty of other local shops, as well as retail parks with high street brands, and convenience stores across the town. Supermarket shopping is taken care of by Sainsbury’s, ALDI, Lidl, Tesco and Morrisons.
Going out
Hartlepool is a large enough town to have festivals and fairs, museums and galleries, town sports clubs and entertainment venues that include a Vue Cinema. The Marina and the Seafront are great for a stroll and a blast of sea air, and the local beaches at South Crimdon, Crimdon Dene and Seaton Carew have miles of sand and dunes and are part of the 11-mile-long Durham Heritage Coast. Middlesbrough and Durham are only half an hour away, making them great options for a day trip or a shopping trip.
Going to school
After primary school, the town has five secondary schools: Dyke House Sports & Technology College, English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, High Tunstall College of Science, Manor Community Academy and St Hild’s Church of England School. There’s also the Hartlepool Sixth Form College. Hartlepool has a College of Further Education and a campus of the Northern School of Art, both in the centre of town.
