Stanley

Local people say that Stanley may have lost its coal mines, but it’s not lost any of its community spirit. It’s in an ideal location for reaching Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead and Durham, and a new home here has proved to be a welcoming starting point for young couples and new families. It only takes 20 minutes to get to the Gateshead Metrocentre or to Durham, so you’ve got the choice of big-city shopping and little city history in equal measure and in equal time.

Living in Stanley

Living here

Most of Stanley’s shops are in pedestrianised Front Street, so they are conveniently close together and are given a boost each week with the Thursday and Saturday markets. The refurbished town centre included a new bus interchange and added a swimming pool to the Louisa Leisure Centre. This is a town where it’s easy to get to know people and to feel a part of a down-to-earth community.

Getting around

The A693 runs through the town on its way to join the A1(M) at Chester-le-Street, getting you to Washington, Gateshead and Newcastle in no time. The A691 takes you into Durham and the A68 is another key route, heading north-south along the edge of the beautiful Durham Dales. Though there isn’t a train station, there’s a great bus service network operating from the Stanley Interchange, and you can then pick up on mainline train services from Durham or Newcastle. Newcastle International Airport is to the north of the city but still only takes just over half an hour by car.

Going to school

There are several primary schools to choose from so families with young children are well catered for. Tanfield School and North Durham Academy are the town’s two secondary schools.

Out and about

Sometimes it feels good to head away from city life and retail therapy, wonderful though it is to have these on the doorstep in Gateshead and Newcastle. The Durham Dales will give you wide open space, moorland and hills, valleys and rivers, with pretty market towns to stop off in on your way. Half an hour to the west of Durham you’ll find yourself in another world.
