Sacriston
Sacriston is a big village with a big sense of community. It’s always had a very close link with Durham cathedral – its name comes from that historic relationship - and today it’s a great place to live if you need to work in the historic city. Like many other coal mining towns, Sacriston has reinvented itself. Woodland has replaced the mine workings, the village amenities have grown along with the families living here. With new families moving into their new homes, this is a place that very much looks forward.

You can get more than just the basics in Sacriston as it’s got a good range of local shops as well as a Tesco Express. There’s a village stores, Post Office, Boots chemists, choice of takeaways and two medical centres – one of which includes a dental practice. For high street shopping, Durham is a very short drive or bus journey away, and there you’ve got retail parks, shopping centres and the independent shops, cafés and restaurants of the historic area around the cathedral and castle.
Going to school
A big part of a community is having its own schools. Sacriston has three – two primary schools and a secondary school, so your youngsters won’t have far to go for their education. Durham offers further options and it’s only 4 miles away.
Getting around
The Durham Road, the A691, is just to the south of the village. You can be in Durham in just 9 minutes so that’s a real bonus for work and pleasure. Chester-le-Street is a large town 5 miles to the north on the A167. If you need to travel further afield, you are not far from the A1(M) which takes you into Gateshead and Newcastle-upon-Tyne to the north, or Darlington to the south. It’s great to be able to get into the countryside of the Durham Dales, or into the main towns of the area so easily. For train travel, you’d need to go to Durham or Chester-le-Street stations and there are direct buses if you don’t want to drive. The operators are Go North East and Arriva North East, and it takes around 20 minutes to get to Durham by bus.

Durham is great for grown-ups, whether it’s shopping, café culture, regatta-time, restaurants or night life. Children won’t miss out though, with Diggerland Durham, Adventure Valley and Wharton Park all within very easy reach.
