Newton Aycliffe

Newton Aycliffe has the interesting story of being the oldest new town in the north of England. It’s grown a lot since it’s creation and is in a very convenient location between Durham and Darlington. Along with a well-established industrial estate and Business Park, Newton Aycliffe has attracted business from Hitachi and Lidl, important players with a knock-on effect for the local economy. There’s plenty of family-friendly green space in and around the town, lots of local shops and the A1(M) keeps everyone very well-connected, making it a good choice for your new home.

Living in Newton Aycliffe

Good connections

Newton Aycliffe’s good location puts several of the North East’s towns within easy reach. Middlesbrough is just 30 minutes drive, via Stockton-on-Tees on the A66. Darlington is a 20-minute drive due south, and Durham is just over 30 minutes drive north on the A167.  Travel by train to these main towns and cities is a good option if you need to commute. For a place in the sun, Teesside International Airport is just over 12 miles to the southeast, an easy drive of under half an hour.

Good schools

There are several primary schools in the town, as well as in the outlying villages of Heighington and Aycliffe Village. The town’s two secondary schools are Woodham Academy and Greenfield School Community & Arts College.

Family activities

Come rain or shine, there’s an activity for all ages. Ruff ‘n’ Tumble Adventure World, the ROF59 Climbing Centre and Planet Leisure for bowling and roller skating will keep everyone entertained. The Oakleaf Sports Complex is family-friendly and close to the town centre. There’s a golf complex and play area there too. Feeding the ducks in West Park is a simple pleasure for young children.

Days Out

For a change of scenery, Newton Aycliffe is halfway between the coast at Hartlepool and historic Barnard Castle on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Day trips to the coast or into the countryside will give you a breath of fresh air.
